Discover East Northport

East Northport is a quaint and bustling hamlet located within the town of Huntington on the north shore of Long Island in the state of New York. Situated in western Suffolk County, about 45 miles east of New York City, East Northport has a population of approximately 20,200 people currently living in the area which covers about 5.15 square miles.

History

In the mid-1600s a group of English settlers that initially settled in Oyster Bay, Long Island, set out in search of more land. They acquired property from the Algonquin Indians in the area that later became known as Huntington Village. A few years later, looking to expand their settlement, the settlers purchased additional land (in the area now known as East Northport) from Chief Asharoken. Notably, parts of neighboring Northport are now named after this historic Native American Indian Chief.

East Northport quickly became a farming community that thrived throughout the 1700s and 1800s. Farming in East Northport was very successful for farmers that planted wheat, oats, and potatoes and raised cattle and livestock.

In 1867, the Long Island Railroad extended its line from Syosset to Northport and a railroad station was built in the village of Northport. In the early 1870s, the route of the railroad changed, bringing the main line south of Northport. While located south, not east of neighboring Northport village, East Northport gained its name when a new Northport train station was constructed east of the original one, and that area came to be called East Northport. To this day, however, the station still kept the original name of Northport Train Station.
