To collect unemployment benefits you must first file for unemployment with the state and claim benefits each week while you are out of work. Some people who do not qualify for standard Unemployment Insurance may qualify for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.
How To File For Unemployment In NY
If you are eligible to receive NYS unemployment benefits, there are multiple ways you can submit your claim. You can either file an unemployment claim by telephone or online using the NYS's website.
TAKE NOTE: NYS unemployment claims are processed by the first letter of your last name! So be sure to file on the correct day of the week.
Last names that begin with A-F file on Monday, G-N on Tuesday,
and O-Z on Wednesday. If you miss the day assigned to your last name, you may file any day after Thursday.
After filing for unemployment benefits, you must then submit a claim for every week you are out of work by logging into the state website and selecting “claim weekly benefits”.
In a recent press conference NY Govenor Cuomo made it clear he and his team in Albany, NY are working hard to get people their unemployment checks. There have been mixed comments about receiving a call from New York State the day after placing your claim.
How Long Until I Get Unemployment Money?
Because so many people have filed for unemployment applications in recent weeks, the amount of time it has taken to receive payments has varied for many people. There have been reports of receiving payments the week following filing for a claim, and others stating they have not received payment in over a month.
The New York State Unemployment website states that they have been receiving an unprecedented amount of web traffic and telephone claims in recent weeks. If you do not receive money right away, be patient. Ask friends and family who are also on unemployment for assistance if you have any questions, as it seems like it is not possible to reach an actual person for assistance.
How Long Is Unemployment In NY
How long unemployment in NY lasts may varies but consider yourself lucky if you are already collecting. Because many people have been waiting for over a month and some close to 2 months in recently applications filed. See this NYS Government website because it is another helpful resource to get unemployment assistance.
How Do I Get The Extra $600 A week?
The Federal Government has signed a law into effect that entitles citizens who are out of work due to COVID-19 to an extra $600 a week in addition to the standard rate you would have received.
