Learn About Northport, NY

Northport was settled by the Matinecocks, one of 13 Native American tribes of Long Island. Chief Asharoken sold the town to three Englishmen in 1656 for 7 quarts of liquor, 2 coats, 4 shirts and 11 ounces of powder. The area became known as Great Cow Harbor. Early settlers grazed cattle on the pastures around the harbor. Wooden shipbuilding became the community's primary industry, and in 1837 the village was being referred to as Northport. It was incorporated in 1894.

Northport is celebrating its 125th Anniversary as an incorporated village in 2019. There will be special events throughout the year all around the town.
